Elizabethan Gardens

The Elizabethan Gardens is a glorious living memorial to the men and women of the Roanoke Voyages (1584-1587) who tried to carve out a living in a strange new world. Over 500 different plant species are found in the 10-acre site on the north end of Roanoke Island, adjacent to Waterside Theater.

While the gardens are particularly spectacular in April, they are beautiful year round. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of Shakespeare's Herb Garden, the Queen's Rose Garden, meandering paths amidst blooming bulbs, azaleas and camellias, and the formal sunken knot garden.

Elizabethan Gardens also is home to an impressive collection of old and new statuary such as an antique Italian fountain in the sunken garden; a stunning marble statue of Virginia Dare; and the newest statue, a bronze likeness of Elizabeth I, the largest of it's kind in the world.

Special events are held throughout the year. Their natural beauty makes Elizabethan Gardens a popular choice for Outer Banks weddings. The site also features an upscale gift shop that carries jewelry, garden related items, books, note cards and other assorted delights. The Gardens also sells plants that have been propagated in greenhouses onsite. Hours vary seasonally. Visitation is by paid admission. For more information: Elizabethan Gardens
