Gate House Entrance & The Great Gate



The Gate House was designed as a 16th century orangery and is furnished with interesting antiques, paintings, and period funishings.

At the height of spring bloom with red tulips in foreground parterres; azaleas on extreme right across walkway; pink azaleas (tall) in back with red and white tulips; purple pansies on left in foreground; purple wisteria winding through pine trees on left and through white dogwood in center.
Autumn in the court yard with vine-red chrysanthemums in foreground, variegated coleus on ground at left; coral geraniums in large stone tubs around fountain; and pineapple sage in bloom in herb garden in back (red spike blooms),

Shakespeare's Herb Garden contains medicinal, odorous and culinary plants.


The Great Gate once hung at the French Embassy in Washington and was a gift to The Gardens arranged by architects Innocenti and Webel.

Daily entrance to the Gardens is through the Gate House door. However, on ceremonial occasions The Great Gate is used. Wedding parties have also used The Gate for the processional.

Queen Elizabeth I and Sir Walter Raleigh are shown in period costumes. The Waterside Theatre, adjoining The Gardens, is home to the ''Lost Colony'', America's oldest outdoor drama.
