Manteo

The Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse has exhibits and displays on the history of the lighthouse, along with information about the area's maritime history.
Manteo is also home to Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, a copy of a screwpile lighthouse that was originally situated in the nearby Croatan Sound. Unlike the best-known lighthouses, tall sentinels near the ocean, a screwpile lighthouse looks more like a keeper's house with a light on the roof, perched over the water on stilts. This type of lighthouse is held in place by pilings that resemble giant screws, providing firm anchorage in a soft, sandy bottom.

If you're interested in history, make sure you go inside the lighthouse, which has exhibits and displays on the history of the lighthouse, along with information about the area's maritime history. Then, walk back over the boardwalk to the mainland, and visit the George Washington Creef Boathouse. Both are part of the North Carolina Maritime Museum. The boathouse is named after a local builder who developed the shad boat, which was essential to fishermen working the waters of the Albemarle Sounds. The museum has several small watercraft on display, including a 1883 Creef Shad boat, spritsail skiffs, and a 1948 Davis Runabout. It also serves as a working boat shop, where volunteers and staff restore small boats and design new exhibits.

The waterfront area of this town is charming, picturesque and quaint because the town's residents, including town officials, have worked hard to keep it that way.
The town of Manteo slows down during January and February, but there are several festivals and activities offered during the rest of the year. Here are some examples:
First Friday: From December to March, the first Friday of the month, from 6 to 8 p.m., the Manteo Waterfront comes alive with family friendly fun, music, shopping and dining specials, all in a festival atmosphere.
Dare Day: Held on the streets and waterfront area of downtown Manteo for more than 30 years, this annual celebration showcases the people and history of Dare County, featuring live music and a street dance.
The New World Festival of the Arts: This juried exhibition features 80 selected artists, from Vermont to Florida, who set up shop in white tents along the Manteo waterfront. This two-day outdoor show has been held for over two decades.

The town also hosts special celebrations on Independence Day and around the Christmas holidays.
